What Face Mask To Wear for Haze in Malaysia 2026

For haze, a genuine, well-fitting particulate respirator such as an N95 provides better protection from fine airborne particles than a loose-fitting 3-ply surgical mask. Malaysia’s Ministry of Health recommends respirators for protection against haze particles and notes that surgical masks do not prevent inhalation of the small particles responsible for haze. KN95 and KF94 respirators can also provide high particle filtration when they meet the relevant certification standard and fit the wearer properly. [1, 5–7]
As a point-in-time snapshot, at 4:00 pm on 6 September 2026, no area in Malaysia recorded a hazardous Air Pollutant Index (API) reading due to haze. Sri Aman in Sarawak recorded 216 and was the only area in the very unhealthy range. APIMS reported unhealthy readings in 35 other areas nationwide, moderate readings in 27 areas and good readings in four areas. [9]
API readings change hourly. Check the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) before planning outdoor activities or deciding how much exposure can reasonably be avoided. [8]
Haze contains very small airborne particles, including PM2.5. A respirator is designed to filter particles from inhaled air and fit closely around the face. An ordinary surgical mask is looser and allows more air to enter through gaps around its edges. [5, 7]
One limitation is worth knowing: particulate respirators such as N95s filter particles, but they do not protect against gases or vapours. Wearing a respirator therefore does not make heavily polluted outdoor air completely safe. [6, 7]
What does the Air Pollutant Index (API) mean in Malaysia?
Malaysia’s API indicates the overall level of air pollution. The higher the reading, the poorer the air quality. [8, 10]
| API reading | Air quality | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0-50 | Good | Air quality is generally satisfactory. |
| 51-100 | Moderate | Most people can continue normal activities, although sensitive individuals should monitor how they feel. |
| 101-200 | Unhealthy | Reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity, particularly if you are vulnerable to air pollution. |
| 201-300 | Very unhealthy | Avoid strenuous outdoor activity and reduce outdoor exposure substantially. |
| Above 300 | Hazardous | Minimise outdoor exposure and follow official health and emergency advice. |
A mask is not a licence to stay outdoors longer. Malaysia’s MOH workplace haze guidance calls for N95 respirator use for outdoor workers from the unhealthy range onwards, together with stronger exposure controls as the API rises. For the general public, reducing unnecessary exposure remains the first priority. [10]
How to reduce exposure during haze
Wearing the right respirator is only one part of reducing haze exposure. When air quality worsens, reduce unnecessary time outdoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activity where possible, and check your local API before planning activities. If you need to be outdoors, use an appropriate respirator that fits properly. [5, 8, 10]

N95 vs KN95 vs KF94 vs 3-ply: Which is suitable for haze?
| Mask type | Standard / filtration | Suitable for haze? | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| N95 respirator | NIOSH-approved N95 filters at least 95% of airborne particles under its certification standard. | Preferred option | High particle filtration and designed to form a close facial seal when fitted correctly. |
| KN95 respirator | Certified under a Chinese particulate-respirator standard; genuine products are designed for high particle filtration. | Good alternative when genuine and well fitted | Check the relevant standard and buy from a reliable source. Fit and product quality matter. |
| KF94 respirator | Korean respirator standard with a nominal filtration requirement of at least 94%. | Good alternative when genuine and well fitted | Actual protection still depends on how well the respirator fits your face. |
| 3-ply surgical mask | Loose-fitting medical mask designed primarily as a physical barrier. | Not recommended as primary haze protection | Does not provide the same facial seal or fine-particle protection as a particulate respirator. |

Is an N95 the best mask for haze?
For an adult who can wear one comfortably and needs particulate protection outdoors, a genuine, correctly fitted N95 is the clearest choice in Malaysia’s MOH haze guidance. [5]
An N95 is a filtering facepiece respirator certified by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The “95” means the filter must achieve at least 95% filtration efficiency under the relevant NIOSH test conditions. The “N” refers to a filter that is not resistant to oil. [6]
Filtration is only part of the protection. If polluted air leaks around the cheeks, nose or chin rather than passing through the filter, the wearer will receive less protection.
Can you wear a KN95 for haze?
A genuine KN95 is a particulate respirator manufactured to a Chinese standard. It can be a reasonable option for haze when the product is legitimate and fits the face closely. [6, 7]
Do not assume that every product printed with “KN95” automatically meets the claimed standard. International respirator quality can vary, so check the packaging, manufacturer information and applicable standard, and buy from a reliable retailer. [6, 7]
Is KF94 suitable for haze?
A genuine KF94 respirator is designed to provide high particulate filtration under a South Korean standard. Its nominal filtration requirement is at least 94%. [1, 6]
KF94 masks often have a different shape from N95 respirators and may be comfortable for some wearers, but fit remains important. A high-quality filter cannot provide its expected protection if large gaps form around the face. [6]
Is a 3-ply surgical mask enough for haze?
No, not as primary protection against fine haze particles.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Health states that surgical masks do not prevent inhalation of the small airborne particles responsible for haze. Respirators work better because they both filter fine particles and form a closer seal around the face. [1, 5]
A surgical mask may still have other purposes, but it should not be considered equivalent to an N95, genuine KN95 or other appropriately certified particulate respirator for haze.
Why is mask fit so important?
A respirator works best when inhaled air is drawn through its filtering material rather than leaking around its edges. [5, 6]
- Cover both your nose and mouth.
- Position the respirator so it sits close to the cheeks and chin.
- Shape the nose area according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check for obvious gaps when you breathe in and out.
- Make sure straps are secure.
- Avoid facial hair between the respirator and skin where the seal needs to form.
Malaysia’s MOH specifically notes that beards, moustaches and even long hair caught under the respirator can interfere with the facial seal. [5]
How do you check a respirator before buying?
A NIOSH-approved N95 should carry specific approval markings. These include the manufacturer or approval-holder name, the N95 filter class, the word NIOSH, and a testing and certification number such as TC-84A-XXXX. [6]
- Check the certification. Look for the correct approval or standard rather than relying only on “N95”, “KN95” or similar wording.
- Check the manufacturer and model. Unclear branding or missing product information is a warning sign.
- Choose the correct size and fit. Even a legitimate respirator can perform poorly if it does not seal well.
- Inspect the mask before use. Do not rely on a respirator that is torn, damaged or distorted.
- Buy from a reliable source. Counterfeit and misrepresented respirators can have inconsistent performance.
Who should be cautious when wearing an N95?
Respirators increase resistance to breathing. Malaysia’s MOH notes that some people may experience breathing discomfort, tiredness or headache while wearing an N95. [5]
- Older adults
- People with asthma, emphysema or other lung diseases
- People with heart conditions
- People who experience claustrophobia
- Women in the later stages of pregnancy
- Children
Malaysia’s MOH haze guidance states that N95 masks are not suitable for pregnant women and children and advises people with chronic lung or heart conditions who feel uncomfortable while wearing one to stop and consult a doctor. [5]
For young children, an adult respirator may also fail to form an effective seal. Reducing outdoor exposure is especially important when air quality is poor.
When should you wear a respirator during haze?
There is no need to wear a respirator simply because haze exists somewhere in Malaysia. The decision should reflect:
- The API in your location
- How long you expect to be outdoors
- Whether the activity is strenuous
- Whether outdoor exposure can be avoided
- Your age and health status
A respirator is most useful when exposure to polluted outdoor air cannot reasonably be avoided. It should be used together with, not instead of, exposure reduction. [5, 7, 10]
When should you replace a haze respirator?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product. Replace the respirator if it:
- Becomes wet or heavily soiled
- Is physically damaged
- Becomes distorted and no longer seals properly
- Becomes noticeably harder to breathe through
- Cannot be worn according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Do not share used respirators with another person.
For haze in Malaysia, a genuine, well-fitting particulate respirator is more appropriate than an ordinary 3-ply surgical mask when particle protection is needed. Malaysia’s MOH specifically recommends respirators such as N95 for haze. KN95 and KF94 respirators may also be useful alternatives when they meet their claimed certification and fit properly. [1, 5–7]

Frequently asked questions about masks for haze
What is the best mask for haze in Malaysia?
Is KN95 or KF94 good for haze?
Is a 3-ply mask enough for haze?
Do I need an N95 whenever the API is above 100?
Not necessarily for every short outdoor trip. Your health, duration of exposure and level of physical activity also matter. When air quality is unhealthy, reducing outdoor exposure is the first step. If outdoor exposure cannot be avoided, a suitable respirator can reduce particulate exposure. [5, 7, 10]
Can children wear an adult N95?
Do not simply put an adult N95 on a young child. It may not form an effective seal, and Malaysia’s MOH lists children among groups requiring special precautions with N95 use. Reduce children’s outdoor exposure when air quality is poor and seek professional advice where needed. [5]
Does an N95 protect against the smell and gases in haze?
Can haze cause headache or fever?
Haze exposure can cause headache, dizziness and fatigue. Malaysia’s Ministry of Health lists these among the possible short-term effects of haze exposure. Fever, however, is not listed among the typical short-term haze effects, so a fever should not automatically be attributed to haze. If you have a fever or feel significantly unwell, consider seeking medical advice rather than assuming haze is the cause. [10]
How do I know if an N95 is NIOSH approved?
Look for required markings including NIOSH, the manufacturer or approval holder, the N95 filter classification and a testing and certification number such as TC-84A-XXXX. NIOSH-approved models can also be checked against the official Certified Equipment List. [6]
