Brave the Cold: Winter Travel Needs

Winter travel has its kind of magic — snow-covered landscapes, cozy lodges, hot drinks, and festive markets. But traveling in cold climates also requires extra care to stay healthy and comfortable. Whether you’re planning a snowy getaway or visiting a chilly city, here’s how to brave the cold and stay well during winter travel.
- How to Keep Warm During Winter
Keeping your body warm is the first line of defence against winter weather. Exposure to extreme cold, or even prolonged exposure to normal winter temperatures, can affect the heart, the brain and other vital organs.¹Start with proper layering: wear thermal innerwear to retain body heat, add an insulating layer like a sweater or fleece, and top it off with a waterproof, wind-resistant outer layer. Gloves, scarves, thermal socks, and a beanie or hat help prevent heat loss from your extremities and head. If you’re spending long hours outdoors, consider heat packs or hand warmers, and always change out of damp clothing as soon as possible.
- How to Prevent Catching a Cold
Cold air doesn’t directly cause illness, but it can weaken your immune defences. Regular supplementation with essential nutrients like zinc, vitamin C, and elderberry extract before and during your trip can support your body’s natural defences.²-⁵
Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and supports immune cell function. You may reduce the duration and severity of colds if taken regularly.²Zinc also supports the immune system by blocking virus replication, thus, shortening the cold duration and lessening severity.³-⁴ Furthermore, elderberries contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that are believed to inhibit growth of some viruses. It is beneficial to consume elderberry supplements.⁵
- What to Do If You Catch a Cold While Travelling
Sometimes catching a cold is unavoidable. Rest as much as possible and stay warm. Act quickly if you encounter any symptoms. Over-the-counter medications like throat lozenges, cough and cold syrup can help manage symptoms. Continue taking immune-boosting supplements like vitamin C, zinc and elderberry to support recovery.²-⁵ Please consult medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.
- Stay Up To Date with Yearly Flu Vaccinations.
The flu vaccine helps protect from the most common flu viruses. There is a chance you might still catch a flu after getting vaccinated, but it’s less likely to be severe and the duration will be shorter. The vaccine takes up to 14 days to work, so make sure you get your flu jab at least two weeks before travelling.⁶
Stay Warm, Stay Safe! Brave the cold with confidence. Winter travel can be an incredible experience if you take care of your immune system, and know how to respond if you fall ill. Plan ahead for a healthy trip. Speak to a CARiNG Pharmacist about how to protect yourself from colds.
