
Malaysia was shocked by the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, best known for his ‘Rahmah’ initiative, was only 61 years old. He suffered brain haemorrhage prior to that.
So, what brain haemorrhage is and why was his death so sudden?
Brain Haemorrhage
Brain haemorrhage is a serious medical condition in which there is bleeding within the brain tissue or the spaces surrounding the brain.
To put it simply, Brain Haemorrhage is the medical term for ‘Brain Bleed’.
A brain haemorrhage is a type of stroke.
This bleeding can lead to a sudden increase in pressure inside the skull, which can cause damage to brain cells and tissues.

What Are The Common Causes of Brain Haemorrhage?
To know what we can do to reduce the risk of brain haemorrhage, we must first understand the common causes:
- High blood pressure: Chronic high blood pressure can weaken the blood vessel walls over time, making them more susceptible to rupture.
- Atherosclerosis: Build up of fatty deposits in the arteries.
- Injury to the head

What Are The Symptoms?
This may surprise many. You may expect more alarming symptoms but Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub’s condition started with nausea and vomiting. He was then rushed to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital at about 10.15pm on Friday (21st July 2023).
Brain haemorrhage is a condition with a wide range of possible signs and symptoms. This may include:
1. Numbness or paralysis to one side of the body 2. Confusion 3. Dizziness 4. Convulsion 5. Change in level of consciousness 6. Loss of vision
While such a condition can never be 100% prevented, you may reduce the risk of suffering brain haemorrhage by managing your blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol. Make sure you get your regular body check done. Controlling your weight and eating a healthy diet also help with the risk reduction.
