People with depression are often blamed for not ‘thinking optimistically’. They are also viewed negatively and presumed to have ‘weak’ mental toughness.
This should not be the way.
Depression Is Much More Complicated Than You Think
Depression is not something you can control by just asking yourself to ‘stop thinking about it’ or ‘stay optimistic’. Depression is a complex mental health condition that is caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Genetics
- Brain chemistry
- Life experiences
- Trauma
It is not something that people can control or choose to have.
Feeling ‘Depressed’ Does Not Equals To Depression
Someone may feel depressed or grief after losing a loved one. However this is not the same as having depression.
In major depression, the feeling of worthlessness or and self-loathing overwhelms the individual. The mood and interest are decreased for most of the time.
Thoughts of death may surface for both someone grieving over the loss of a loved one and someone experiencing depression. In grief, thoughts of death occur due to the urge to ‘join’ the deceased loved one. This is different from someone experiencing major depression. The thoughts of death are focused on ending one’s life due to feeling worthless or undeserving of living or being unable to cope with the pain of depression.

Depression Is Not Your Fault
Depression is not your fault. Depression is an illness that needs help from professionals. Talk to a healthcare professional about your mental condition. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Effective treatments for depression including therapy and medication can make a world of difference.
